School Baseline Assessment

What is School Baseline Assessment?

A school baseline assessment can take many different forms, but it is essentially a means of collecting information about a child's development or achievement as they enter a new environment or age group.

School baseline assessments are conducted in a variety of different ways, from informal observations to standardized tests.  The data collected from these assessments help educators fully meet the needs of each child, highlighting both her strengths and her areas of development.

School Baseline Assessments Type

When children enter primary school, it is common for teachers to conduct a series of observations at the entrance of each child.  teachers will observe children at play and carry out simple tasks with them to collect information that can be used to assess children's education.

This is the usual baseline assessment that allows teachers to monitor how well critical thinking, language, math, and social skills are being developed. The Reception baseline assessment does not assess all aspects and areas of learning, but rather focuses on mathematics, literacy, along with communication and language.

In this article, we will cover a variety of baseline assessments to better educate teachers on which baseline assessment is best suited for their students.

The key features of the School-Based Assessment are:

✅ It is proposed to be a decentralized test where test document preparation will be done at the district level, for which NCERT will provide training, and test administration will be done at the school level.

✅ A non-standardized assessment would be used to link each child's individual learning styles. Portfolio, self-assessment, and peer assessment will be emphasized along with teacher assessment.

✅Assessment of personal social qualities along with cognitive skills will be encouraged. A robust and relevant feedback mechanism will be incorporated allowing the teacher to provide immediate and constructive feedback to students.

✅The School Baseline Assessment would have an online reporting system of both school and teacher performance that can be monitored at the District, State and National levels.

Guidelines, manuals, videos, e-books, and e-learning materials for conducting the School Baseline Assessment will be developed and shared with states and UT.

✅ School Baseline Assessment would imply in its framework "a whole school approach" that involves community involvement in the learning process. Student progress would be discussed with parents and shared with SMCs and suggestions sought.

✅ When implementing the SBA, emphasis will be placed on on-site mentoring by the Group Resource Center Coordinator (CRCC). CRCCs would nurture and support teachers on a regular basis. Teachers would be encouraged to participate in quality circles within groups.

✅ Sample verification will be performed by an external agency to validate data from schools.
