The QR code system was invented in 1994 by Masahiro Hara of the Japanese company Denso Wave. QR codes are now used in a much broader context, including business tracking apps and convenience-oriented apps for mobile phone users.
QR codes can be used to display text to the user, add a vCard contact to the user's device, open a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI), connect to a wireless network, or compose an email or text message. There are many QR code generators available as software or online tools that are free or require a paid subscription. The QR code has become one of the most widely used two-dimensional code types.

QR Code - Quick Response Code is the trademark of a type of matrix barcode first designed in 1994 for the automotive industry in Japan. In practice, QR codes often contain data for a locator, identifier, or crawler that points to a website or app.

The Quick Response system became popular outside of the automotive industry due to its fast readability and increased storage capacity compared to standard UPC barcodes. Applications include product tracking, item ID, time tracking, document management, and general marketing. The required data is extracted from the patterns that are present in the horizontal and vertical components of the image.

QR codes have become common in consumer advertising. Typically, a smartphone is used as a QR code scanner, which displays the code and converts it into some useful form (such as a standard URL for a website, which avoids the need for a user to type it into a Web navigator). The QR code has become a focus of advertising strategy as it provides a way to access a brand's website more quickly than manually entering a URL.

Beyond mere convenience to the consumer, the importance of this ability is that it increases the conversion rate - the chance that contact with the ad will turn into a sale. It tricks interested prospects down the conversion funnel with little delay or effort, taking the viewer to the advertiser's website right away, where a longer, more targeted sales pitch can lose the viewer's interest.

Although initially used to track parts in vehicle manufacturing, QR codes are used in a much wider range of applications. These include business tracking, entertainment, and transportation ticketing, product marketing, and loyalty, and in-store product labeling.

Marketing examples include where you can capture a company's percentage discount and discount using a QR code decoder which is a mobile app, or store a company's information such as address and related information along with their data Alphanumeric text as you can see in the Yellow Pages directory.

They can also be used to store personal information for use by organizations. An example of this is the Philippine National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), where NBI clearances now come with a QR code. Users can receive text messages, add a vCard contact to their device, open a URL, or compose an email or text message after scanning QR codes.

They can generate and print their own QR codes for others to scan and use by visiting one of the several sites or applications that generate free or paid codes. Google had an API, now deprecated, to generate QR codes, and applications for scanning QR codes can be found on almost all smartphone devices.
